First shows go on sale for the 2014 Ludlow Arts Festival

It may only be January, but as the days get longer and summer inches ever closer, the 2014 Ludlow Arts Festival is beginning to take shape. This year’s Ludlow Arts Festival will run from 28 June to 6 July and follows the Ludlow Shakespeare Festival which will be staging AS YOU LIKE IT from 14 to 22 June. Star casting to be announced!

Both Festivals will be held in the grounds of the magnificent Ludlow Castle. Following the huge success of the 2013 Ludlow Arts Festival the Big Top Theatre, which seats 800, will return to play host to ten of the twelve shows in this year’s line-up.

The 2014 Ludlow Arts Festival will showcase the best of British music; five-times winners of ‘Best Live Band’ at the Radio 2 Folk Music Awards, BELLOWHEAD, on Saturday 5 July, will be one of two outdoor concerts in this year’s Festival. They occupy a unique place in Britain’s musical landscape – a blistering 11-piece band fusing folk, funk, rock, world, jazz, music hall and classical music. Their folk sound with a modern twist will perfectly complement the wonderful surroundings of the Castle in what is sure to be an unforgettable live outdoor experience.

Kicking off a week of diverse and exciting shows on Saturday 28 June are comedy-cabaret legends FASCINATING AÏDA, with their brand-new show, Charm Offensive.

FASCINATING AÏDA return to Ludlow following their sell-out show at the 2013 Festival. Sell-out tours, three Olivier Award nominations and over 10 million YouTube hits for ‘Cheap Flights’ (their infamous anthem on budget air travel) are testament to the popularity of this trio who will unveil a collection of topical new songs alongwith some outrageous old favourites! Dillie Keane, Adele Anderson and Liza Pulman really do continue to grow old disgracefully.

He has travelled the world and survived some of its harshest environments, and this summer RAY MEARS brings his theatre show AN EVENING WITH RAY MEARS – THE OUTDOOR LIFE to Ludlow on Tuesday 1 July.  He is perhaps the foremost expert in his field – and no doubt the widest-travelled – and over the past two decades he has become recognised throughout the world as an authority on the subject of Bushcraft and Survival. Don’t miss this captivating show – which has sold in out theatres around the UK – in which Ray talks about his life and shares stories from his many years surviving the wilderness and its colourful wildlife.

KEN DODD, one of the country’s most celebrated entertainers, now entering his seventh decade of tickling our funny bones, will this year honour Ludlow Arts Festival by performing his marathon of anecdotes, one-liners and slapstick at the Big Top Theatre on Friday 4 July for one performance only.

Early booking is strongly advised for Ken’s famous Happiness Show where audiences will be absolutely discumknockerated (that’s Knotty Ash for ‘over the moon’) by a truly tattifelarius (fun-filled) evening of laughter and song presented by a comedy genius.

Ludlow Arts Festival Director Chris Davis said:

“This year’s Ludlow Shakespeare and Arts Festival is going to showcase the full range of British arts and culture from theatre to music to comedy and everything in between. There will be something for everyone with acclaimed acts such as Bellowhead, Fascinating Aïda and the British institution that is Ken Dodd, to the wonderful Shakespeare production of As You Like It, we really do have the perfect mix of outstanding and unmissable entertainment set against the historic backdrop of the country’s most famous ruined medieval Castle.”

As well as the great entertainment, the Ludlow Arts Festival also offers a superb range of quality food and drink.

Further shows will be announced over the forthcoming weeks. Watch this space.
