The Great Escape, the festival for new music, is back with a bang and returning to Brighton 19th-21st May 2016 to celebrate its 11th year. For the past decade, TGE has decked the streets and venues of the seaside home of new music with an unparalleled showcase of international and local acts, establishing the stars and sounds of the future and marking this 3-day festival as the ultimate destination of discovery.

In that spirit TGE today announces the first wave of a line-up that will eventually total over 450 artists playing across 30+ Brighton venues including pop-duo OH WONDER, one of the most anticipated artists of 2016, who play the first Spotlight Show at All Saints Church with support from SHURA and MURA MASA.

Also joining the line-up today is BANFI’s grungy confessional, Norwegian ‘Songbird from the North’ DAGNY, sixteen year old singer-songwriter and winner of this year’s Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition DECLAN MCKENNA, post-punk baggy pop foursome BEACH BABY, boy-next-door-meets-trash-pop tyros TRUDY and RUKHSANA MERRISE, who twists contemporary RnB and classic soul with folk vocals.

SAINT SISTER blend ‘atmosfolk’ with Celtic harp traditions, while young London troubadour ISAAC GRACIE’s gravelly, beautifully wrought vocals promise a spine-tingling experience, DILLY DALLY produces a frank, brutalist sound with an indie-punk template, and Scottish starlet KLOE provides crisp, crystal-clear electro-pop.

They rode in the vanguard of noughties indie-pop and bought us such infectious tunes as “Two Doors Down”; now MYSTERY JETS will bring their stripped-back, atmospheric fifth album, ‘Curve Of The Earth’ to TGE.

Experimental sounds will be provided by Lithuanian cabaret-tinged acoustic songstress ALINA ORLOVA, “noisy brash” popstar ELLE EXXE, electronic bedroom pop producer CONNER YOUNGBLOOD who warps banjo riffs and harps, OWEN RABBIT who reconstitutes rubbish, bottles and matches as instruments to create textured, haunting music, and 18 year old WILL JOSEPH COOK, the musical embodiment of that glorious summer feeling.

TGE’s constant evolution continues with a fresh visual revamp in the form of new branding, partially inspired by 1960’s Japanese Yokoo style pop-art to express the core experience and theme of the festival; discovery: of new music, new talent and new sounds.

With the new year comes new developments, one of which this year sees The Great Escape’s age limit reduced to 16+ at certain venues, opening the door for an even broader spectrum of music fans to revel in an incredible array of music.

On the new announcements, Event Manager Kevin Moore said: “Over 10 glorious years, TGE has gone from strength to strength, breaking the hottest new bands and providing a monumental platform for emerging artists. 2016 is a big year; we’re so excited to come back full throttle, launching a new website as well as a bold new brand to create a fresh face for TGE; we wanted to find a connection to the place, the people, the music and the importance of the event. The introduction of the new 16+ wristband is also huge for The Great Escape as it allows us to welcome a different type of new music fan to the festival.”

Finally, running alongside the official festival programme is The Great Escape Convention, the UK’s biggest music industry event. The team from CMU Insights will present four full-day conference strands, each focused on a key area of the music business in 2016. This year’s strands are…
‘Data! Transparency! Blockchain! Let’s Make Buzzwords Happen!’; ‘Who The Hell Is Still Buying CDs?’; ‘What If YouTube Actually Is The Future?’ and ‘What Has The Music Industry Ever Done For You?’

Following on from the acclaimed CMU Insights strands at TGE 2015, these self-contained mini-conferences will each combine a unique blend of industry training, original research, case studies, expert interviews and lively panel debates.
